Stockholm, Sweden-headquartered Midsummer and Saab began negotiations on expanding production capacity for a planned solar cell factory in Colombia. The discussions were linked to Saab’s offset commitments from the Gripen deal. Both companies had signed an MoU in November 2024 to explore industrial cooperation focused on solar manufacturing and technology. They identified the possibility of establishing a Colombian factory for thin-film solar cells using Midsummer’s technology and equipment, with Midsummer responsible for design and supply. In May, Midsummer received a SEK 143 million order from Saab for machinery for a 15 MW facility, with an option for future expansion. Midsummer also set up a sales company in Colombia as interest in the region increased. Colombian authorities showed interest in the technology, and the project’s scope and timeline were to be decided through ongoing discussions. Earlier to this, Midsummer was also selected in Italy for quantum dot solar research, underscoring its parallel research advancements.
