Midsummer, Swedish thin film solar cell manufacturer, was selected by the Italian Ministry of University and Research to join a consortium for the “Quantum Dot Enhanced Lightweight Solar Cells” (QDELS) project. The project aims to develop a new quantum dot-enhanced copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS)/perovskite tandem solar cell. The company was granted approximately EUR 2.8 million (~$3.09 million) for testing work and materials. The project, with a total budget of EUR 7.5 million (~$8.28 million), will begin in autumn and run for four years. Other participants include Consorzio Hypatia and the National Research Council. Midsummer's Italy-based subsidiary operates a thin film solar cell factory in Bari, which previously received EUR 22 million (~$24.29 million) in grants. The tandem cell R&D project is separate from the Bari factory initiative.Eco On has also partnered with Midsummer to distribute its lightweight solar panels, separate from the QDELS research initiative.
