LONGi, a China-based PV module manufacturer, has launched the Hi-MO 9 Ice-Shield module to improve PV plant resilience against increasing hail-related damages. According to the Solar Risk Assessment 2025 by kWh Analytics, hail accounted for only 6% of global PV loss incidents but caused 73% of economic losses in 2024, amounting to $1.2 billion. Europe recorded 11,808 hailstorms in 2024, marking a 104% increase from 2022–2023. LONGi has designed the Ice-Shield module with fully tempered front glass that is 60% thicker than conventional types and offers 4.5 times higher impact resistance. The frame uses 6005-T6 aluminum alloy and supports mechanical loads of ±5,400 Pa. The module has passed tests for 55 mm hailstones at 33.9 m/s, surpassing IEC standards. LONGi has also integrated HPBC 2.0 cell technology, achieving up to 24.8% efficiency. Global orders for the Hi-MO 9 Ice-Shield module have exceeded 1 GW, and the module has received certifications from RETC, TÜV Rheinland, and TÜV SÜD.
