Sunrun, the leading US provider of clean energy subscription services, activated its CalReady power plant to aid California’s grid during a severe heat wave during July 9-12. According to the company, over 16,000 customers’ solar-plus-storage systems discharged an average of 48 MW each night, peaking at 51 MW, sufficient to power up to 48,000 homes. This output surpassed that of several gas-fired peaker plants. CalReady, the largest single-owner virtual power plant in California’s Demand Side Grid Support program, operates daily from 4 to 9 p.m. through October. Sunrun customers involved in CalReady are compensated for sharing their stored solar energy, enhancing grid reliability and advancing clean energy solutions. With nearly one million customers and over 102,000 installed storage systems, Sunrun claims to lead the clean energy across the US.
