Savion, LLC, a Shell Group portfolio company, has launched the 111 MW Martin County Solar Project (MCSP) in Kentucky. Built on reclaimed mine land, it is Savion’s first fully owned and developed solar project. Over 40 years, it is expected to power 18,500 Kentucky homes annually. Approved in 2021, the project received a $231 million IRB and a $600,000 tax incentive. Construction from October 2023 to December 2024 created 300 local jobs. Toyota Motor North America purchased 100 MW via a VPPA, with Shell Energy North America securing the remaining 11 MW. Local partnerships were key to the project’s success, showcasing Kentucky’s role in renewable energy.
