Zelestra, a Spain-based developer and operator of utility-scale renewable energy projects, has signed Spain’s first large-scale hybrid solar-plus-storage PPA with EDP, a Lisbon-headquartered utility. The Agreement will facilitate the development of a 170 MW DC PV facility, combined with 400 MWh of BESS in Extremadura, Construction of the asset is scheduled to start in the second half of 2025. Zelestra stated that the battery system has been designed to fully charge daily using solar generation, ensuring energy dispatch during evening peak demand regardless of weather conditions. The project is expected to generate around 300 GWh of clean electricity annually and reduce over 40,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year. Zelestra has a global carbon-free portfolio of approximately 30 GW, of which 5.5 GW are in advanced stages of development, while EDP operates over 29 GW of renewable capacity globally. Recently, Zelestra has signed a virtual PPA with Graphic Packaging for a 19 MW solar plant in Villamañán.
