The Asian Development Bank (ADB), a multilateral development bank has approved a $650 million policy-based loan for India, aimed at expanding residential rooftop solar access for 10 million households. The program is anchored in the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana initiative, which has offered graded subsidies for rooftop systems up to 3 kilowatts capacity. ADB stated that long-standing financing and regulatory barriers were being addressed through uniform guidelines, quality standards through collateral-free, low-interest loans. The program has also targeted capacity building for 5,000 personnel, including 1,500 women, while supporting utility-led aggregation models and vendor ecosystem development. The effort was expected to advance India’s 30 GW rooftop installation target by 2027 and reduce annual emissions, while $3 million in technical assistance has been included to support implementation. Recently, the Asian Development Bank also financed ReNew’s $477 million hybrid project in Andhra Pradesh, reinforcing its ongoing support for India’s clean energy programs.
