In the first half of 2024, Germany saw substantial growth in renewable energy, with 9.3 GW of new capacity added, according to Federal Network Agency’s (Bundesnetzagentur) latest report. This resulted in a net increase of 5.3% after accounting for the decommissioning of older installations. Solar power led the growth, contributing nearly 10% more capacity since the end of 2023, reaching over 90 GW. Wind energy also expanded, with onshore permits rising by 70% compared to the previous year. Offshore wind capacity increased by 377 MW, though onshore wind saw a modest 1.5% growth due to numerous older installations being shut down.
