ENGIE has announced the commencement of the Grootspruit solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in the Free State, which will operate at a 75 MW contracted capacity in partnership with Pele Green Energy. According to the company, Grootspruit is one of two PV power plants under construction in South Africa, with the other being the Graspan solar PV plant in the Northern Cape. Both plants are set to be commissioned by the end of 2025, each contributing 75 MW to the South African electricity grid. Aurex and Ablon, selected as the preferred contractors, bring substantial industry expertise. The company claims that together, the Grootspruit and Graspan plants will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 100,000 tons of CO2 annually, meeting the electricity needs of approximately 80,000 South African households.
