The US Department of Energy (DOE) announced $45 million to develop and test technology to protect the electric grid from cyber-attacks, aiding the deployment of clean and affordable energy. Cyber threats can disrupt critical energy infrastructure, impacting supply, the economy, and consumer health. Combined with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, this funding will enhance cyber defenses in the energy sector. The DOE’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER) will support up to 15 RD&D projects aimed at creating tools to autonomously detect, prevent, and mitigate cyber-attacks without disrupting energy delivery. Six project areas include Automated Cyberattack Prevention, Security by Design, Authentication Mechanisms, Vulnerability Mitigation, Advanced Software Solutions, and Integration with Existing Infrastructure, focusing on enhancing cybersecurity across the energy sector.
