US-based DartSolar LLC has introduced an expanding solar roof rack for electric vehicles (EVs). The rack expands to 1 kW in park mode and contracts to 360 watts while driving. It provides 10–20 miles of charge daily and deploys in just 15 seconds. The system is water-, wind-, and dust-proof and integrates with a compact rear power unit converting solar energy into 120-volt AC for power tools or emergencies. Its aerodynamic, 1.5-inch-thin design minimizes efficiency loss. The panels are lightweight, 1/8-inch thick, and support easy maintenance via open-source blueprints and 3D-printed repair parts. Priced at $2,950, with a two-year payback period and 5X ROI, it boasts a 10-year lifespan. DartSolar is planning a 3,000-watt model using tandem solar cells, aiming to offer 30–40 miles of charge daily.
