Tongwei, a crystalline silicon solar cell producer, and Huaneng Group has jointly developed China’s first “grass-PV complementarity” pilot project in Damao Banner, Inner Mongolia. The 50 MW solar PV project forms part of a larger integrated wind-PV-storage initiative. It aimed to generate 85 million kWh annually, with PV panels raised to 1.5 meters to support grass cultivation and livestock below. Two integration models were designed for degraded steppe restoration with carbon sequestration or ecological pasture use. Construction began on February 22, 2025, and reached 55% completion by mid-June. The project underwent ecological assessments before siting. Zhang Xin of Yongxiang stated it is expected to connect to the grid by September 2025. The plant was designed to save 30,000 tons of standard coal and cut 90,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The pilot project complements Tongwei’s broader innovation efforts, including its TNC 2.0 module that recently earned the EUPD award in Shanghai.
