France-based research institute CEA-LITEN, in partnership with Italian company 3SUN, has achieved a certified 29.8% efficiency for a perovskite-on-silicon tandem photovoltaic cell, measured 9 cm² after shading correction. CEA-LITEN says this is a significant improvement from the 26.5% efficiency recorded in March 2023, highlighting the rapid advancement of this technology. Unlike most global efficiency records based on smaller 1 cm² cells, this achievement on a larger 9 cm² surface emphasizes scalability and industrial readiness, it adds. According to 3SUN, a subsidiary of ENEL Green Power, new high-efficiency silicon photovoltaic production lines in Sicily, with 3 GW of capacity, are set to open this year. The use of perovskite and silicon materials could push conversion efficiencies beyond 30%, positioning CEA-LITEN and 3SUN as leaders in solar energy innovation, CEA-LITEN anticipates.
