France-headquartered Technique Solaire and INRAe completed a study examining the impact of photovoltaic aviaries on poultry behavior. The results showed that chickens dispersed more widely in the outdoor range and used shaded areas created by solar panels, especially during hot weather. This reduced stress and aggressive behavior near the barn. By the fifth week, chickens ranged up to 50 metres from the building, spending more time away from the crowded barn entrance. The panels acted as shade structures, improving animal comfort. These findings showed that solar aviaries help chickens use the outdoor space better and stay more comfortable. After this, a bigger study started in 2024. It will run for three years, cover different seasons, and look at chicken behavior up to 100 metres from the barn. The new study will also track farm performance, such as how much feed the chickens need, how much they weigh, and how many survive, to understand the long-term impact.Earlier, Technique Solaire secured €302 million in funding to expand photovoltaic projects across Europe, building on its broader push for integrated solar infrastructure.
