UGT Renewables, a US-based clean energy developer, has planned to develop a 3 GW solar project in Iraq. The Iraqi Minister of Electricity met with the British Ambassador and other officials to discuss the agreement signed with UGT Renewables. The project included 500 MW of energy storage and 1,000 kilometers of HVDC transmission lines. The Iraqi ministry aimed to produce 12 GW of solar energy by 2030. Officials expressed interest in expanding cooperation and technology transfer. In 2023, Iraq signed agreements with TotalEnergies and PetroChina for additional power plants. The Iraqi cabinet approved projects for 7.5 GW of solar energy by 2030 as part of a national energy strategy.
