Acciona Energía, a Spanish renewable energy company, has begun constructing a 177.9 MW solar project in La Joya, Arequipa. The San José facility is its first photovoltaic installation in Peru,The plant is expected to be completed and operational by the end of 2026. It will connect to SEIN through a 9.2 km, 220 kV transmission line at San José substation. The plant is set to host 288,000 panels, producing 488 GWh annually—enough for 325,000 people. It is expected to avoid 255,000 tons of CO₂ emissions each year. Acciona stated this equals removing 100,000 combustion cars or planting 6.5 million trees. Up to 500 workers will be involved during peak construction. Peru is seen as a key emerging market due to high solar potential. Acciona has operated in Peru since 1998 and acquired a transmission business from Darby Capital for €220 million in 2024.Earlier this year, the company also broke ground on a 176MW solar plant in the Philippines, continuing its rollout of large-scale projects across Asia and Latin America.
