US-based PV tracker supplier GameChange Solar has recently released an updated white paper addressing hail mitigation strategies for trackers. The revised document incorporates findings from the CPP Wind Engineering Consultants study examining wind behavior during hail events. CPP analyzed wind direction within 30 minutes of 137 hail events in East Texas and 48 events in Queensland. The analysis found that 75% or more of storms produced winds from both east and west sectors. The study concluded that pre-hail wind direction is not a reliable predictor of hail direction. GameChange Solar has stated that tracker systems should be designed to handle wind loads on both module faces. The company has also emphasized the importance of steep stow angles of at least 60 degrees. The white paper was presented at a New York City Solar Insights event. Recently, the Khulis Solar PV project in Saudi Arabia has selected GameChange Solar trackers for its 1.2 GW installation.
