Google backs Solstice’s solar access innovation

US-based Solstice, a leading community solar provider, has secured funding from Google.org to advance its EnergyScore initiative, promoting clean energy access for low- to moderate-income (LMI) households. EnergyScore uses machine learning to address barriers to solar energy, such as homeownership and financing issues, which exclude around 80% of American households from rooftop solar installations. The new metric combines utility payment history with AI to predict payment behavior, expanding access for LMI individuals. Early results show EnergyScore reduces default rates by 1.9% and increases LMI access by 14%. Google’s support will facilitate the launch and pilot testing of EnergyScore with solar developers. Solstice will implement monitoring frameworks to ensure ethical AI practices, aligning with Google’s commitment to sustainability and equitable clean energy access.
