DOE partners with Hecate Energy for 1 GW solar project

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has initiated negotiations with US-based Hecate Energy, LLC for a one GW solar project with integrated battery storage at the Hanford Site. This project is part of the Cleanup to Clean Energy initiative, aiming to repurpose land once used for nuclear weapons, aligning with the Biden-Harris Administration’s clean energy goals. It supports Executive Order 14057, which mandates federal agencies to achieve 100% clean electricity by 2030 and utilize federal assets for renewable projects. The competitive selection process involved public consultations and proposal evaluations, with Hecate Energy chosen for its proposal. The project also promises economic benefits, including job creation and environmental improvements. The DOE will oversee environmental reviews and engage with stakeholders, including local communities and Tribal Nations, ensuring regulatory compliance and sustainable development.
