ECREEE completes solar mini-grid for Fogo Island

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) has launched a clean energy mini-grid system in Chã das Caldeiras on Fogo Island, Cabo Verde. This initiative, funded by the Cabo Verde government, ECREEE’s Special Intervention Fund (ESIF), and USAID, is anticipated to provide enhanced electricity access for the island. The system features a 40 kWp solar photovoltaic capacity, 150 kWh battery storage, a 50 kVA generator, and a 5-kilometer underground distribution network. It now powers 210 households, serving approximately 800 residents. As per the company, similar projects have been completed in Nigeria, The Gambia, and Togo, with additional installations planned for Benin, Ghana, and Senegal in the near future.
