In the first half of 2024, Germany generated a record 140 TWh of renewable electricity, accounting for 65% of net public electricity generation, according to the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE. Wind energy was the largest contributor, with 73.4 TWh, up from 66.8 TWh in 2023. PV systems generated 32.4 TWh, a 15% rise from 2023. Overall, renewable sources constituted 60% of the load, up from 55.7% in 2023. The data from energy-charts.info also highlighted a net import surplus of 11.3 TWh, contrasting with a net export surplus of 0.8 TWh in 2023. Imports from the Scandinavian countries, France, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands were cheaper due to favorable wind and hydropower prices. Exports were primarily to Austria, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, and Poland.
