The West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) has partnered with Starsight Energy to switch 30% of its electricity from diesel generators to solar power, aiming for 1.2 GWh annually over 15 years, starting in 2024. This move aligns with WACT’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and APM Terminals’ global goal of being fully net zero by 2040, with a 65% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2022. The project involves installing a 1,092 kW solar-only system in two phases, expected to cut WACT’s carbon footprint by roughly 20kt of CO2 over the agreement’s lifespan. WACT, owned by APM Terminals, is positioned within the Oil and Gas Free Zone in Onne Port, Rivers State, serving as a vital gateway to markets beyond Lagos and East Nigeria.
