US-based Ameresco, Inc. has inaugurated a 3.5 MW community solar project in Boone County, Illinois. The installation, located on a former landfill near Route 76 and Squaw Prairie Road, features over 9,600 solar modules across 34 acres. This marks the 160th community solar project in ComEd’s northern Illinois service area. Boone County subscribes to 36% of the energy generated. These subscriptions power facilities providing essential public services. Local businesses also subscribe, receiving bill credits and annual savings of up to 10%. Ameresco collaborated with Boone County and the city of Belvidere on this project. The initiative supports the state’s 2021 Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA). CEJA requires 10% of the workforce on such projects to come from equity-eligible groups, rising to 30% by 2030.
