JA Solar, a leading Chinese solar module manufacturer, has initiated a patent infringement lawsuit against a competitor at the Unified Patent Court (UPC). As per the company, it filed two complaints with the Munich and Hamburg Local Divisions, specifically targeting the competitor’s TOPCon solar modules. The dispute centers around two key patents: EP 2 787 541 B1, covering the tunneling oxide layer and thin polysilicon layer on TOPCon cells, and EP 4 092 759 B1, which relates to solar panel electrode arrangement. According to JA Solar, these technologies improve solar cell efficiency by enabling electron tunneling and reducing recombination. The patents, valid until 2034 and 2035, are enforceable in multiple European countries, including Germany and the UK, says JA Solar.
