The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) is enhancing its renewable energy initiatives by engaging in a PPA to install solar energy parking lot canopies at three corporate locations. Expected to produce 27 GWh over 10 years, this project in Linthicum aims to save over $12 million in electricity and maintenance costs. Partnering with CI Renewables, UMMS plans to commence construction in fall 2024, with energy generation starting in mid-2026. UMMS’s broader commitment to renewable energy includes operating a solar farm and hydroelectric arrangement, along with on-site cogeneration plants at various hospitals. Currently, 35% of UMMS’s energy is derived from no or low carbon sources. By 2025, with additional solar farms and cogeneration plants, UMMS aims to raise this figure to nearly 50%.
