Netherlands-based Wattlab, a developer of maritime solar technologies, signed a contract with Norway’s Berge Rederi at Europort Rotterdam to equip the BRF Froan bulk carrier with 96 Solar Flatracks. The system, generating 172.8 kWp, was scheduled for installation during a stop-over in Flushing before the vessel’s delivery to Norway in summer 2026. Berge Rederi chose Wattlab for its maritime expertise and proven onboard solar systems. The BRF Froan, currently under construction, was designed as the world’s largest battery-powered bulk carrier with a 23.5 MWh battery, two rotor sails, and shore power facilities at Brønnøy and Elnesvågen for zero-emission operations. Earlier to this, Wattlab installed its first full-scale Solar Flatrack system on a Vertom vessel, showcasing the technology later applied to the BRF Froan project.
