Scatec ASA, a renewable energy solutions provider, has been named preferred bidder for the 846MW Kroonstad PV cluster in South Africa. The award was granted under Round 7 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) by the Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE) in South Africa. It followed a reallocation of capacity from onshore wind to solar PV. The cluster is in Free State and includes Oslaagte Solar 2 and 3 (each 293MW) and Leeuwspruit Solar (260MW). The total project cost is ZAR 13 billion (~$ 735 million), with up to 90% financed through non-recourse debt and the rest by equity. Scatec holds 50.90% equity, Greenstreet 46.50%, and Community Trust 2.6%. Scatec is responsible for EPC, O&M, and asset management. The projects will operate under 20-year PPAs. Financial close is expected in 2026, with construction starting the same year. This is Scatec’s largest solar award in South Africa to date.
