The Albanese Government is the current federal government of Australia has approved the 250 MW Weasel Solar Farm in located around 76 km north of Hobart, Bothwell, Tasmania. The project includes approximately 4,000 solar panels and a 144 MW, 576 MWh battery energy storage system. Theproject is designed to generate enough electricity to power around 30,000 homes and will connect to the National Electricity Market within the proposed Tasmania Midlands renewable energy zone. The project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 44,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually which is comparable to planting more than 4,50,000 trees. The solar farm has been designed to minimize environmental impact by using cleared agricultural land with its layout allowing continued sheep grazing underneath the solar panels. The approvals process for the project was completed in 20 days. Construction is expected to create up to 300 direct jobs with up to 20 ongoing roles for maintenance, inspection and management.
