Britain has rejected Xlinks' Morocco-UK subsea energy project, which aimed to supply up to seven million UK homes with solar and wind power from the Sahara via a 3,800 kms subsea cable. The UK government stated that domestic energy projects offer better economic benefits and align more closely with its goal to build homegrown power sources. The project, which had previously been designated as nationally significant, faced funding and regulatory challenges. Xlinks had sought a guaranteed minimum electricity price from the UK under a contract for difference scheme. Over 100 million pounds (~ $ 137.38 million)have already been invested in the project by companies including TAQA, TotalEnergies, and Octopus Energy. Despite the setback, Xlinks plans to explore other ways to advance the project.
