Basra Sun, a 1 GW solar power plant, is under construction in Basra province as part of Iraq’s $27 billion Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP). The GGIP is jointly owned by TotalEnergies (45%), Basrah Oil Company (30%), and QatarEnergy (25%). According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), civil works have begun on the 22,500-acre site in the Basra desert. The project will be built in four units, each with a 250 MW capacity. In October 2024, QatarEnergy has confirmed that it will own a 50% stake in the PV project, with TotalEnergies retaining the remaining share. The facility will feature 2 million bifacial panels on single-axis trackers and will be commissioned in phases from 2025 to 2027.
