Indian city Thiruvananthapuram is nearing completion of its 17 MW Solar City project, making it the first Indian city to achieve 100% solar-powered public buildings under the Solar City programme. Solar panels have been installed on 515 state and central government buildings, contributing a total capacity of 17,063 kW. The rooftop solar programme, initiated in July 2022, has commissioned systems at 484 sites with 13,017 kW, while 28 locations pending installation add 3,968 kW. A site with 50 kW is in procurement, and two remaining sites will add 28 kW. The project, implemented by Anert and funded by Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd., received ₹42.5 crore (~ $4.9 million) and 20-40% state subsidies. Key sites include the Kerala Legislative Assembly and Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, aligning the project with India’s climate and energy goals.
