UK-headquartered Solarcentury Africa, a renewable energy developer and Zambia’s Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) signed an agreement to develop a 67 MW solar plant near Chisamba to ease power transfer from the south. The project aimed to connect to the ZESCO backbone near Chisamba, Central Province, to reduce dependence on power transfer from the south. IDC secured the project site and conducted initial technical studies, while Solarcentury Africa was responsible for development, design, funding, and delivery. The plant was designed to supply power to IDC’s large industrial users, addressing Zambia’s power shortages. The project aligned with Zambia’s Integrated Resource Plan to diversify the energy mix and improve energy security. This project is part of Solar century Africa expanding its solar portfolio, including a recent 20 MW Namibia plant. In addition to this Solarcentury Africa had previously developed 25 MW of a 100 MW solar project in Kanona, Serenje District, set for commissioning in Q2 2025.
