Secure Solar Futures, a Virginia-based solar energy developer, has entered a 25-year Solar Power Purchase Agreement with Roanoke City Public Schools. The project includes 5.7 MW of solar installations across eleven school sites, with roof restoration at seven locations, and is scheduled to begin in late Q2 2025. Under the agreement, Secure Solar Futures will install, own, and maintain 9,766 bifacial solar panels, supplying electricity at rates lower than traditional utility costs. The systems are expected to generate 335.1 million kWh over 35 years, equivalent to powering 46,918 homes for one year. Roanoke schools are projected to save $46.5 million, including $14 million in avoided roof replacement costs. The partnership also includes workforce development programs for students to train as solar power technicians, and provides curriculum support and teacher training across all grade levels.
