Essen-headquartered, RWE has begun constructing a new 13.9 MW PV plant on 12 hectares at the western edge of the Hambach opencast mine in Düren district, North Rhine-Westphalia. Set for commissioning in September, the plant will host over 22,000 modules above the future shore of the planned Hambach Lake, and is expected to generate enough power for approximately 4,500 households. This project expands RWE’s renewable energy infrastructure at the former mining site, where two other solar plants with a combined 47.2 MW capacity and an 8 MWh battery storage system are already operational. These existing facilities, operated jointly with NEULAND HAMBACH GmbH, currently serve around 14,500 households.
