Roltec, a PV research center based in Wrocław, is establishing a new CIGS thin-film solar module facility with support from European Union funding. The project is being developed in partnership with Singulus Technologies AG, a Germany-based company that specializes in vacuum process equipment. Roltec has planned to install three advanced PVD spray systems by 2025 to deposit contact and buffer layers using dry, precise, and environmentally compatible methods. According to Singulus Technologies, the collaboration is intended to enhance sustainable solar production and strengthen the regional renewable energy supply chain. Roltec is also conducting tandem solar cell research under the EU Horizon program, focusing on SITA and HI-Bits structures. CIGS is used as the lower junction, where it can be paired with wide-bandgap top cells to exceed single-junction efficiency limits in next-generation solar modules.
