Rio Tinto, headquartered in London, has signed an MOU with AMG Metals & Materials to assess a low-carbon aluminium project in India. According to Rio Tinto, the project includes a 1 Mtpa aluminium smelter and 2 Mtpa alumina facility powered by wind, solar, and pumped hydro. As per AMG Metals & Materials, an initial feasibility study will focus on a 500,000 tpa smelter at a suitable location. AMG M&M, promoted by Greenko and AM Green founders, is responsible for delivering firmed renewable energy with support from Greenko. Rio Tinto has stated it will evaluate smelting technologies and alumina sourcing. The project is expected to meet demand from automotive, construction, and packaging industries.
