Photon Energy N.V.’s South African subsidiary, Photon Renewable Energy Pty Ltd, achieved a milestone in developing a 250 MW concentrated solar PV plant. The project included 150 MW (1.8 GWh, 12 hours) of thermal hydro storage in Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal. The company secured 1,200 hectares of land for the project.It also received favourable grid connection terms. This ensured connection to the grid. Photon Energy plans to collaborate with Eskom and the local operator. The goal is to develop technical solutions for grid integration. The EIA was scheduled to finish by Q4 2025. Zoning was also progressing. Additionally, Photon Energy planned to apply for the NERSA energy license. It is also planned to initiate the Public Participation Process. The project aimed for ready-to-build status by Q2 2026. The company sought Strategic Integrated Project (SIP) status to accelerate development.
