The Punjab government has approved a 40 MW grid-connected canal-top solar photovoltaic project to be implemented by the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) on a build, own, and operate basis. The project will use sections of the state’s irrigation canal network leased from the water resources department at INR 1.5 lakh (~ $1,800) per MW annually for 28 years. Power generated will be supplied to the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) at a benchmark tariff of INR 3 (~ $0.036) per unit, subject to regulatory approval. PEDA has started inviting bids from developers, with each eligible to secure up to 20 MW. The plan follows earlier 20 MW canal-top projects in the state and forms part of Punjab’s ongoing expansion of solar infrastructure.
