The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has announced that CleanCapital will build a 12 MW solar project in Adirondack Park. The project will be on an underutilized part of Benson Mines in St. Lawrence County. This was the first auction under New York’s Build-Ready program, which aims to repurpose underused land for renewable energy. NYSERDA managed permitting, design, and approvals before transferring the project to CleanCapital. It will be on a former iron ore tailings pile and is expected to power 3,000 homes. CleanCapital signed a 20-year agreement to sell Renewable Energy Certificates to NYSERDA. Local agencies secured tax agreements and created a $200,000 community fund. Benson Mines will continue aggregates and timber operations while adding solar development.
