Governments of Sri Lanka and India reached an agreement to establish solar power plants in Trincomalee, with capacities of 50 MW in stage one and 70 MW in stage two. The project was structured as a joint venture between the Ceylon Electricity Board and India’s NTPC on a construction, ownership, and operation basis. Initially, NTPC planned to develop a coal power plant at the site, but it was later converted into a solar power station. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s government considered retaining Adani Group’s investment in green energy if they renegotiated the purchase price.
