New Zealand-based Meridian Energy received final consent approval from the Environment Court to construct the 120 MW Ruakākā Solar Farm in Tai Tokerau Northland. Initial consent was granted by the Northland Regional Council in September 2024, but an appeal was filed regarding environmental concerns. The appeal was resolved through discussions and led to enhanced wetland and duneland protection. The project is part of Meridian’s Ruakākā Energy Park and includes a 100 MW battery energy storage system that is set for completion by April 2025. The solar farm consists of up to 250,000 panels and generates 200 GWh of electricity each year, enough to power half of Northland’s homes. Meridian planned to invest $3 billion in renewable energy projects by 2030. If the board approves the project in March, construction will start in mid-2025 and finish by early 2027.
