Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) announced that the 250 MW Darien Solar Project in Rock and Walworth counties is now operational. Developed by U.S.-based Invenergy LLC, the facility spans 2,000 acres in Bradford and Darien and is expected to generate electricity for 75,000 households annually. MGE owns 25 MW of solar capacity from the project. A 75 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) is also planned, with full operation expected by 2026. MGE will own 7.5 MW of the storage capacity. The remaining 225 MW of solar capacity and 67.5 MW of battery storage will be owned by We Energies and Wisconsin Public Service (WPS), subsidiaries of WEC Energy Group. MGE aims to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels and achieve net-zero carbon electricity by 2050.
