Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, India has installed rooftop solar systems for 20 lakh households, with plans to add another 30 lakh soon, moving towards the target of one crore beneficiaries. Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said nearly half the participating households are already receiving zero electricity bills, highlighting the scheme’s impact. A utility-led model has also been approved for households without rooftops, with states like Andhra Pradesh advancing implementation rapidly. The scheme is demand-driven and benefits will follow a first-come, first-serve basis. Joshi emphasized India’s progress of achieving 251.5 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity out of the 550 GW target by 2030. He also noted India’s solar manufacturing capacity has reached 100 GW, with ₹ 50,000 crore investment and 12,600 jobs created, while work on the second phase of the PM-KUSUM scheme is planned for post-March 2026.
