Hubballi Airport in Karnataka has become the highest electricity-generating Airports Authority of India (AAI) facility. As per airport director Rupesh Kumar Sripad, the plant, developed by Madhav Infra Project Limited of Gujarat, has generated2.4 crore units over the past two years, meeting its own needs before supplying surplus power to various AAI establishments in Karnataka. These include the Ballari Radar Station, Bengaluru Gagan Air-navigation monitoring station, and residential colonies at Bengaluru-Devanahalli Airport and Mangalore Airport. The INR 33.2 crore (~ $3.65 million) project has saved INR 12.4 crore (~ INR 1.36 million) in power costs, earned INR 2.1 crore (~ $0.23 million) from surplus energy, and secured additional revenue through sales to KPTCL. Spanning 38 acres under the Sustainable Green Airport Mission, it is estimated to offset2.1 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions.
