The Guyanese government has provided electricity to over 37,000 households located in Amerindian, riverine, and remote communities. This was achieved through the Solar PV Home Energy Systems (SHE) project, which was relaunched in July 2023. As per the Guyana Energy Agency, the initiative has exceeded its original target of 30,000 households, delivering an estimated 4.8 MW of capacity across more than 245 off-grid villages. Each home has received a SHE unit equipped with a 160 W solar panel, a charge controller, a 48 Ah lithium-ion battery, two LED lamps, a 12 W fan, and a USB port for small device charging. The project was funded through a $7.2 million credit agreement between the Guyanese government and the Government of India, facilitated by Exim Bank. An additional 7,000 systems are being distributed in 2025 to further expand rural electrification.
