Greenbacker Renewable Energy Company, a US-based clean energy investor, has recently started construction of the Cider Solar Farm in New York. The Genesee County project has covered 2,500 acres and is expected to generate one million MWh of electricity annually, supplying power to approximately 120,000 homes. According to Greenbacker, Cider was the first project that was permitted under New York’s Section 94-c rules. Greenbacker has acquired the project from Hecate Energy and has secured $950 million to support its acquisition, construction, and operation. The company is hiring local union labor to support hundreds of construction jobs. Greenbacker has also said that agrivoltaic practices, including rotational sheep grazing across 300 acres, will be implemented. The project is scheduled to be completed in late 2026 and is expected to offset 680,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions in its first year.
