Atlanta-based Georgia Power has filed a request with the Georgia Public Service Commission seeking certification for two new solar-plus-storage projects totaling 350MW. According to the company, the sites in Laurens and Dougherty counties have been selected for their high solar irradiance and minimal grading requirements. The proposed facilities include a 200MW solar system with 200MW of battery energy storage in Laurens County, and a 150MW solar installation paired with a 150MW battery system near the former Plant Mitchell site. These systems are part of a broader 9.9GW capacity expansion aligned with Georgia Power’s 2025 Integrated Resource Plan. The projects are expected to support future winter energy needs, improve dispatchability of solar generation, and repurpose land previously used for coal-based electricity generation.
