South Sudan made progress in renewable energy with its first large solar power project. The Ezra Group set up a 20 MW solar plant in Gondokoro. It also built a 14 MWh battery storage system. Ezra Construction and Development Group Ltd. funded the project. The project aimed to reduce pollution. It also aimed to make electricity cheaper and power 16,000 homes in Juba. The battery storage system stored extra energy. This helped keep the power supply steady. The South Sudan Electricity Corporation (SSEC), the Ministry of Energy and Dams, and Jordan Enterprise Development Corporation(JEDCO ) supported the project. It provided 19% of JEDCO’s electricity. More solar projects, like the Nisitu Solar Plant, were planned. These aimed to improve energy supply and reduce reliance on costly power.
