China-based solar thermal technology company,Cosin Solar has been awarded the Qinghai Yichu Golmud 350 MW Tower CSP (Concentrated Solar Power) Project. The project was selected under the Qinghai Province CSP Demonstration initiative, which was launched in mid-2024. The project is the world’s largest single-unit CSP installation in terms of capacity, heliostat area, energy storage, and expected output. It is equipped with a 14-hour molten salt storage system and a heliostat field of 3.3 million m² controlled by 89,000 heliostats. Cosin Solar began developing the plant’s core technologies in 2022 and completed the system design by July 2024. As of now, feasibility reviews and engineering design selection are complete, with civil construction scheduled to begin in September 2024. The company has introduced innovations such as a distributed energy storage layout and a short-shaft pump solution to reduce operational costs and improve reliability.
