In collaboration with Secure Solar Futures and Intuit, the Coalfield Solar fund completed solar projects for two school districts across Virginia and West Virginia in December 2024. The Coalfield Solar Fund, headquartered in Virginia, was established to assist K-12 schools in coal-producing regions of 2 US states. Secure Solar Futures, based in Virginia, develops, maintains, and operates solar projects, while Intuit, headquartered in California, provides financial support. Lee County Schools have installed a 451 kW solar portfolio with 970 panels across two locations, while Calhoun County Schools have deployed a 600 kW capacity with 1,289 panels across two campuses, bringing the total installed solar capacity to 1,051 kW. The systems will generate 1,327,060 kWh annually and offset 1,120 metric tons of CO2 emissions each year. Both districts financed their projects through 25-year PPAs with Secure Solar Futures. Calhoun County Schools became the first in West Virginia to implement PPA financing, a model legalized in the state in 2021.
